Welcome to HIAFAN (“we,” “our,” or “us”). We are committed to protecting your privacy and personal information. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application and services.

By using HIAFAN, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. If you do not agree with the terms of this privacy policy, please do not access the application.

2. Information We Collect

We collect several types of information for various purposes to provide and improve our service to you:

Phone number (if you sign up or sign in with a phone number)
Username and display name
Profile picture
Password (encrypted)

Usage Data

Device information (device type, model, operating system version)
IP address, and the approximate region derived from it (country and city level — we do not collect precise GPS location)
App usage statistics: screens viewed, features used, session length and frequency
Time spent in the app
Which push notifications you open

Diagnostic Data

Crash reports and error logs, including the technical state of the app when a crash occurs
Performance data

Prediction and Game Data

The predictions you make, their scored difficulty, and their outcomes
Your Ball Knowledge rating, points, streaks and game results
The teams, leagues and private leagues you follow or join

User Content

Hoots (posts) you create
Comments and replies
Votes and reactions
Teams you follow
Direct messages (encrypted)

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the collected data for various purposes:

To provide and maintain our service
To notify you about changes to our service
To allow you to participate in interactive features

To gather analysis or valuable information to improve our service
To monitor the usage of our service
To detect, prevent, and address technical issues, including diagnosing crashes

To score, resolve and display your predictions, and to compute ratings and leaderboards

With Your Consent

We may share your information for any purpose with your consent.

Public Content

Any content you post publicly (hoots, profile information) is visible to other users.

Service Providers

We may employ third-party companies to facilitate our service, provide the service on our behalf, or assist us in analyzing how our service is used.

Legal Requirements

We may disclose your information if required to do so by law or in response to valid requests by public authorities.

Business Transfers

If we are involved in a merger, acquisition, or asset sale, your information may be transferred.

5. Automated and AI Processing

Some HIAFAN features use automated systems, including third-party AI services, to process content you submit:

Prediction scoring and resolution

When you post a prediction, its text is analyzed automatically to identify what you predicted, price its difficulty against betting-market odds, and later determine whether it came true.

Content moderation

Content you submit is automatically screened before it is published.

AI Referee and reactions

When the AI Referee is invoked on a discussion, the relevant post and comments are analyzed to produce a ruling.

Daily games

Question generation and fact-checking for our daily games use automated systems.

For these features, the relevant text is sent to our AI provider (OpenAI) for processing and a result is returned. You can avoid this processing by not using the features that rely on it — for example, by posting a regular hoot rather than a prediction.

We do not use automated processing to make decisions producing legal effects concerning you.

6. Data Security

The security of your data is important to us. We implement appropriate technical and organizational security measures to protect your personal information, including:

Encryption of data in transit (SSL/TLS)
Encryption of passwords using industry-standard algorithms
Regular security assessments
Access controls and authentication
Secure data storage

However, no method of transmission over the Internet or method of electronic storage is 100% secure. While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.

7. Your Data Rights

You have certain rights regarding your personal information:

Access: You can request a copy of your personal data.

Correction: You can update or correct your information through your profile settings.

Deletion: You can delete your account and associated data through Settings > Delete Account.

Export: You can request a download of your data through Settings > Download My Data.

Notifications: You can adjust notification preferences in Settings, and disable notifications entirely in your device settings.

Analytics: HIAFAN does not currently offer an in-app toggle to disable analytics and diagnostic collection. You can request that we delete the analytics data associated with your account by contacting us.

Advertising: HIAFAN does not serve advertising, and we do not sell your personal information or share it with third parties for their own advertising purposes. We do not track you across other companies’ apps or websites.

8. Children’s Privacy

Our service is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children under 13.

If you are a parent or guardian and you are aware that your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us. If we become aware that we have collected personal information from children without verification of parental consent, we take steps to remove that information from our servers.

9. Third-Party Services

Our app may contain links to third-party websites or services that are not operated by us. We have no control over and assume no responsibility for the content, privacy policies, or practices of any third-party sites or services.

We use the following third-party services:

Infrastructure

Supabase — authentication, database and storage
Expo — app infrastructure and push notification delivery
Vercel — hosting for our websites

Analytics and diagnostics

PostHog — product analytics (which screens and features are used)
Sentry — crash and error reporting

AI processing

OpenAI — prediction parsing and scoring, content moderation, AI Referee rulings, and daily-game question generation (see “Automated and AI Processing” above)

Sports and odds data

ESPN — game schedules, scores, box scores and rosters
The Odds API — betting-market odds used to price predictions

Communications

Twilio — SMS delivery for phone sign-in, where enabled
Resend — transactional email

Media

GIPHY — GIF search, when you use the GIF picker

We encourage you to review the privacy policies of these services.

10. Data Retention

We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you services.

If you delete your account:

Your profile information is deleted immediately
Your public posts may be anonymized or deleted
Backup copies may persist for up to 30 days
Some information may be retained for legal obligations

We will retain and use your information to the extent necessary to comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our policies.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by:

Posting the new Privacy Policy on this page
Updating the “Last Updated” date
Sending you an email notification for significant changes
